NOTICE TO RESIDENTS REGARDING MOTOR VEHICLE EXCISE TAX ABATEMENTS

 

Owners of motor vehicles registered in East Brookfield where the vehicle has been sold, traded, gifted or junked during the past three (3) years may qualify for an abatement of the tax and a partial refund if the original tax was more than five dollars $5.00.  The vehicle must no longer be in your possession.  Removing insurance coverage on a vehicle does NOT qualify for an abatement.

In order to qualify; the vehicle registration must have been cancelled or transferred to another car before December of the tax year AND the vehicle must have been sold, traded junked or given away to some-one else; the bill must be have been paid in full.

Abatement Applications are available to download on the Assessors’ page of the Town of East Brookfield website (at left).

The application can be filed by mail, email (assessor@eastbrookfieldma.us) or by putting it into the Drop Box outside Town Hall.

The application requests reasons for abatement as well as REQUIRED documents for filing.  The documents REQUIRED are the copy of the bill of sales/trade in papers AND the plate cancellation/transfer receipt from the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
