Then and Now
Present site of the Town Highway Barn
after the 1955 Flood

1955 This is a picture of the East Brookfield Water and Highway Garage located on Stevens Road. This building was originally part of a textile mill complex known as Stevens Mill. This building has served our water and highway needs sense the 1940s.

The damage seen in this picture was created by the flood of August 19th, 1955. This flood was a result of Hurricane Connie that swept across southern and central New England on Aug 13th dumping 4 – 6 inches of rain and Hurricane Diane that hit 5 days later on August 18th providing an additional 14 inches of rain. Many of the floods throughout the region caused massive damage and some resulted in many deaths.

Today the area includes this garage shown on the right and a metal garage to house the equipment, the salt and sand shed and the town recycle center.

April 2009 This is the present day Highway Department looking down Stevens Road. The building on the immediate left is the brick building shown in the above photo on the right, it houses the departments equipment. The building in the center of the photo is the present salt shed. The recycle center is in behind the salt shed and is not visible in this photo.
